Insulation
Insulation is a layer of either glass wool, fibre wool, rigid board, foam, cork, or hemp, that is used to regulate the temperature of a property. It keeps the inside of the building warm during colder months and cool during the summer. Loft insulation is considered the best way to start with insulating your home, as warm air mostly escapes via the roof.
Choosing which type of insulation you need depends on your application and the age of the property. Mineral wool, sheep’s wool, and glass wool all have excellent insulation performance because their fibres trap air and slow heat transfer. Because this type of insulation is flexible, it is normally installed in lofts, cavity walls, and even around pipes or oddly shaped spaces.
Rigid insulation board includes XPS, EPS, and PIR. These have a high thermal resistance, or what you’ll commonly see as R-value. The higher the R-value, the higher the thermal resistance. They even have high resistance to moisture, so are perfect for external applications like walls, flat roofs, and basements.
For a renewable and sustainable solution, cork and hemp are both excellent insulators. These can be used on lofts, floors, and internal partitions. Pipe insulation is also a great way to regulate the temperature of your home, as hot water pipes can lose heat to the air around them, while cold water pipes can absorb it. For this application, foam tubes are generally used.
