Lintels are integral to the structural support of a building. They are horizontal strips that bear the weight of bricks, mortar, and building materials often found above windows, doors, fireplaces, and in masonry walls.
Lintels are a horizontal beam-shaped material. They can be made from steel or concrete, and some have special thermally efficient engineering. One of the most common types of lintels in many UK residential buildings is a rolled steel joist, also known as an RSJ. These are often used for larger openings like extensions, loft conversions, and load-bearing walls.
On a cavity wall, lintels are one of several components used. They provide major structural integrity whilst the cavity closers and weep vents prevent moisture ingress and condensation, creating the perfect build that will last for years.
