Vapour Control Layers
Vapour control layers are a type of building material used to prevent condensation and moisture build-up in a structure. They are normally made from either plastic or foil, and installers often fit them alongside insulation.
Often abbreviated to VCL, a vapour control layer acts as a barrier that restricts air containing moisture or vapour into the building’s internal structure. Without them, this moisture and condensation would build up and inevitably lead to mould, rot, and even decay of the property. They are great for areas most prone to these issues, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and utility rooms.
VCLs can be made from either plastic or foil. The use location will depend on which one you choose. Foil has a very high vapour resistance. However, it is much more prone to tearing than plastic, so must be fitted professionally with absolute precision. It is perfect for applications exposed to extreme moisture, like swimming pools, saunas, steam rooms, and even warm roofs. Plastic vapour control layers are much more common and used on residential pitched roofing and loft projects.
Liquid vapour controls layers are also available. These are made for applications that have irregular fittings or components that an installer wouldn’t be able to fit VCL sheet around. They can be painted or sprayed on, and create a moisture-tight seal in the same way the sheets do. It is important to note that they are more prone to thermal bridging so must be installed by a professional.
